Implement alternatives for high overhead content
- Note that the member list, joining the society, and, potentially, annual meeting functions are now supported by CiciCRM
Implementation 1: is to redirect traffic to sites maintained in the nscss wiki , or nscss forum
Implementation 2: is to redirect traffic to a project maintained outside of NSCSS Soil Wikiproject.
NSCSS content for which this has occurred:
- State Soil Science Associations list: from forum to here
- State Soil Science Licensing list: from forum to here
- Universities with soil science curriculum: from forum to here
Discussion: Implementation #1 is moving forward, but needs improved distinction distinction between wiki and regular website. There is support for including/expanding content currently linked to through ../soil.html.
Improve Appearance:
- Change the colors used on the webpage. Even if we go with "earth tones," soil and other aspects of the environment can be very colorful. I still like a lot of white in the background. It is easier to read.
- Photographs are always good even though they slow the speed down (they can be disabled if someone wants to surf faster).
Improve member content:
- Member listings:
- indicate areas of specialization
- Re-organize into a more usable format
- Take steps to prevent "harvesting" of email addresses by spambots
Expand content:
- On job opportunities posted at ../jobs.html: add dates posted, date open status last confirmed.
- Soil science portal, building on previous success of ../soil.html. (Support: Mark, Larry, Kari)
- Post all newsletters.
Add content:
- Information presented at annual meetings: Proceedings, powerpoints
- Technical resources download area (trench safety, etc.) (Mark agrees)
- Restricted-access content (let's discuss)
- Should our minutes be password protected? (Mark agrees)
- Add personal, dynamic and/or interactive content:
- Individual biographical information
- This now in progress. Some concern expressed that:
- Content not linked to home page and/or
- Orphan biographies
- Chapter and regional news
- An NSCSS history page, that would include the past presidents, executive committees, committees, etc. for each year. Include a brief history of accomplishments and newsworthy items.
- An on-going historical photo log of NSCSS meetings and members in action.
- Post carefully written, board of directors and technical committee (hint) approved, NSCSS technical notes to address a wide-range of technical issues: (a)what is the HCL used for? (b)what is the hydrogen peroxide used for? (c) what is the proper use of dipyridyl? (d)dynamic/evolutionary high intensity soil survey standards (similar to the process used by ASTM), (e)on-site septic system evaluation protocol, etc.
- Post carefully written, board of directors and safety committee approved (hint), NSCSS health and safety notes to address a wide-range of issues: (a) trench safety, (b) safety in the field, (note: this is very critical for obvious reasons, but it can also serve as a means of communicating with those who are seeking state licensing of soil scientists.
